Failing to Make Canada Proud: Canadian Waffle Poutine

While hanging out in Downtown Austin yesterday evening, I needed to find some place to grab a bite to eat. As you can guess, finding food on the cheap isn’t an easy task in a downtown setting. After walking around a bit, I came across Frank’s.

From what the Internet tells me (and the Internet never lies), Frank’s is best known for their hot dogs. But that just wouldn’t do for me. Oh no. Because when I saw Poutine on the menu, I just had to give it a try. So, how did it compare to what I had in Canada?

Compared to the usual method of poutine (which is fries topped in a brown gravy and cheese curds), Frank’s uses waffle fries instead. Outside of that, it’s your usually setup. The brown gravy definitely had the brown gravy flavor to it but it was really salty. I wanted to like the gravy but the salt ruined it for me. As for the fries, they could have been better. They had a really dry taste to them. Even soaking in the gravy couldn’t help them. The only redeeming factor were the cheese curds. They definitely fit the cheesy texture you’d expect from melting cheese.

Needless to say, it just couldn’t hold up to the poutine I had in Canada. In fairness to Frank’s, they’re a hot dog place. I’m not going to judge the quality of the place just on this one meal. But when it comes to poutine down south, I’ll have to keep looking.

Earlier this month, I had my first job interview after being unemployed for nearly five years.. Later that same week, I was hired. Two weeks later, I started that job. And now, one week later, I am no longer employed. Again.

So, what happened?

If you know me, you’ll know that I’m not exactly a very outgoing person. I keep to myself. I enjoy silence. Guess you could say I can be a bit of a loner. Even then, it’s nice to be able to try and interact with others from time-to-time. So when it was announced that comedy podcast NSFW Show would be putting on a gathering with musical acts, I figured I’d put in the effort to try going.

If you read about my experience from last year, you’d know it was a failed effort. I made a bunch of noise about being excited about going and whatnot. But once I got there, I kept to myself in a corner and didn’t say a word to anyone. I didn’t want that to happen again.

Fast forward to this year. #SXSoWasted 3 was announced. I had to go.

I said I was going to do it and it’s finally started. Earlier this week, played around with livestreaming on Twitch. I’m not doing anything fancy or special. If anything, it gave me the chance to finish up DuckTales Remastered.

What’s next? One of the things I’ve been wanting to do is replay Final Fantasy VII and see if it’s as good as every keeps claiming it is. I played it back when it first came out but I really don’t remember much about it. (Final Fantasy VI on the other hand…) So I’ll play that for a good hour, hour and a half every other day or so.

I’d like to play a platformer too now that I’m done with DuckTales. I don’t really have much on Steam when it comes to platformers. Would like to give games like Guacamelee and Rayman Legends a try but those cost a but more than I can afford at this moment. I might even go the emulation route to play some of the console games I have. Yes, I know. Not the same as playing ON a console but I have to work with what I have.

Anyways, just wanted to get a quick post out there to say I’m streaming now. Yay.

I’m currently stuck at a train station just outside of Buffalo, NY as I worked my way back from Canada to Texas. I have a lot on my mind right now, so to try and keep myself occupied, I figured I’d write a little about what I plan on doing in the future.

While in Canada, my friend Jaclyn was very generous. I mean REALLY generous. While there, she gave me several games on Steam, a new 3DS XL and games, as well as a Wii Mini and games. If that wasn’t enough, she also gave me a Wacom drawing tablet! (And I don’t even know how to draw.) I honestly don’t know what to tell her other than thank you a million times.

Now, for those that know me, I don’t exactly make a lot of time for myself for leisurely activities. Usually, I’m working on some kind of project. It would be completely unfair to Jaclyn for her gifts to collect dust. So what’s the solution? Easy: livestream. All the cool kids are doing it, so why not jump on the bandwagon. I’ve always wanted to do media production anyway so maybe this could be a step in that direction.

At this time, I’m going to stick with what I easily have access to, which would be Steam. I would like to do the console games, but those are going to have to wait since they require a capture device. I even want to do mobile games since my phone supports a MHL adapter and my tablet supports HDMI. But again, that would still require a capture device. Wii and mobile games will require a capture device ($150 minimum) while 3DS games will require the installation of a capture device ($250 minimum).

As of right now, my Steam library consists of the following games:
Awesomenauts
Breath of Death VII
Cave Story+
Chtulhu Saves the World
DuckTales: Remastered
Final Fantasy VII
Plants vs Zombies
Skullgirls
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic 3 and Knuckles
Terraria

As I noted, Jaclyn also gave me a drawing tablet. Now I have no idea what I’m going to do with this. If anything, I gotta learn how to use it. The other problem is I have no artistic abilities, so once I learn how to use it, I gotta figure out what I’m going to do with it. I’m definitely open to suggestions here.

I’m thinking streaming at least three times a week. Probably no longer than a hour, hour and a half at a time.  As for the games, I’m thinking of starting with Final Fantasy VII as I honestly don’t remember it being as great as people seem to make it. A replay of it would help with that. I’ll probably stream that twice a week since it’s a long game. As for the other day, I can’t decided between DuckTales: Remastered and Cave Story+. I’ll probably go with DuckTales first since it’ll be a little quicker. Not to mention I’m already playing a long game (FF7).

It should be noted I’m going to suck at this. I’ve helped set up a livestream but I’ve never done one myself. I know I’m going to get trolled as well. That part I don’t care too much about. I’m sure I’ve heard ever insult so far.

I also haven’t decided on how to stream. All the kids seem to use Twitch, which I like because I can use an IRC client for chat. Problem is my username has been taken (TravisTubbs) so I don’t know what I should do for a username. The other option is YouTube Live / Google+ Hangouts On Air. I like this because I can invite other people into the video easily. But it’s not good for text-based chat. Maybe I can use them both on different days and games. This would be useful in helping me keep up with the different streaming services. We’ll see.

So that’s the plan. I’d love to hear some feedback. Hit me up on Twitter (@TravisTubbs), Google+, or email (travis@travistubbs.net). I guess I’ll have to create a Facebook profile AGAIN to keep up with any kind of community that could happen. That’s going to suck since you all know I hate Facebook.
