2010 Winter Garage Sale / Auction (Part 2)

TOO LATE!

As I write this, auctions for my Dell Mini-Tower Computer and HP Laser Printer are ending (or have ended). But as those two head out to their new owners, three more auctions have appeared: a HP Wireless G USB Printer Server, Microsoft Office:mac 2004 Student and Teacher Edition, and my beloved Apple iPhone 2G.

As before, if you want to check these items out, just head on over to my eBay page and take a gander at them or click the links below. If you're interested in buying any of these things, you're going to have to place a bid on them.

These may be the last things I list this month, but I'll have more to post next month. After that, things will really be uncertain.

2010 Winter Garage Sale: Apple iPhone 2G (Unlocked) and Accessories

SOLD!

From 2010 Winter Garage Sale: Apple iPhone 2G

I was going to post this over on eBay, but figured I'd go ahead and post some information about the phone here first to see if there are any interested parties.

Product: Apple iPhone 2G (8GB, First Generation, Unlocked, Jailbroken)
Asking Price: Negotiable (see below)

(Below is the text I will be using for my eBay Auction if I am unable to find a buyer through here or unable to come to terms on a a reasonable price for the items listed below. Currently, the phone (used) is going for anywhere between $120 and $355 on eBay.)

You are bidding on a used (but in good condition) 8GB iPhone 2G, the first generation iPhone released by Apple. The phone has been unlocked for use on AT&T and T-Mobile and jailbroken, meaning you can install apps from outside of Apple's App Store. The latest iPhone Software (3.1.2) has been installed and is ready to use out of the box. The phone was originally purchased back in February 2008 from the Apple Store.

In the Box
Included in this auction is everything that originally came with the phone, including the 8GB iPhone 2G, its box, the original AT&T SIM Card that came with the phone, a USB cable, a dock, a USB-based wall charger, and headphones.

Additional Accessories
In addition to that, I am also including an additional dock, another USB cable, a wall-charger, a car charger, a headphone adapter, and a case (with belt clip). And, if I can find them, I will throw in some screen protectors too (I have no idea where I put them, so, no guarantees on the screen protectors.)

Available for use on AT&T and T-Mobile
This iPhone has been unlocked for use on AT&T and T-Mobile. Just put your SIM Card in and you're ready to go.

The original AT&T SIM Card that came with the phone is included as it has not been used. It can be used to sign up for new service on AT&T.

Note: This phone is not capable of 3G speeds (even though the AT&T SIM Card says "3G" on it). Can also be used on any other GSM-based network in the world.

Install 3rd Party Apps
This iPhone has been jailbroken, meaning you can install applications that Apple doesn't approve of in their App Store. Using an App called Cydia, you can find applications such as security apps, customization programs, and other great and useful apps and utilities.

Blemishes
There are a couple of blemishes. A small scratch appears in the upper left of the display. Only noticeable when iPhone's display is off. On the back, there is a little dent in the upper left corner. These blemishes do not affect the operation/use of the iPhone.

Shipping
I will ship this via a USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box ($10.70). As this is a very important item, I am requiring it be sent via Certified Mail (for tracking) and Insuranced (amount varies depending on winning bid).

Note: Sorry, but I will not sell or ship to anyone outside of the United States. After being burned previously by an international buyer and the mess of dealing with customs when just trying to ship gifts to friends, international buyers and shipment for me is a big no-no. Please don't ask. I just said I won't.

I think that should answers most questions, but if you have any others, let me know!

Why the Google Nexus One (possibly) Isn't Badly Priced

UPDATE: I misread the original article. The subsidized Google Nexus One does NOT come with unlimited minutes. It only comes with 500 minutes. This changes things completely. Will updated details when I get a chance. Keeping the original content below because, come on. It's already there. No need in hiding my mistake.

After reading the possible pricing of the Google Nexus One, I was definitely faced with sticker shock. But after crunching the numbers, it may not be all that badly priced, when compared to the competition.

According to sources in the above Gizmodo article, the Google Nexus One will be available straight from Google for $530. That price is already cheaper than the iPhone 3GS (AT&T), Palm Pre (Sprint), and Motorola DROID (Verizon). The most important thing here is that the phone will be unlocked, unlike the other phones, which are tied to their respective networks. Of course, within the United States, that means you can only use the phone on AT&T and T-Mobile.

Speaking of T-Mobile, you can pick up the phone on a 2-Year Contract with T-Mo for $180. There is one catch, though: you are required to get T-Mobile's Even More Plus plan with it (Unlimited Talk, Text, Web), which is $79.99 a month. That isn't so bad as subsidized phones from T-Mobile are usually required to be on the Even More plan instead, which is $10/month more. Of course, this still sucks as you can't go with a cheaper plan if you don't need unlimited minutes (like myself).

When you finally get down to solid numbers, though, going subsidized or unsubsidized isn't so bad. Going the subsidized route, you'll be paying $180 + ($79.99 x 24), which comes out to $2099.76 after the two years. If you decide to go the unsubsidized route AND the cheapest Even More Plus Plan (500 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited web), you'll pay $530 + ($59.99 x 24) = $1969.76, which is only $130 cheaper when compared to the subsidized route.

With this information, you can see when compared to the competition (as shown on this very useful chart from BillShrink), the Google Nexus One is still the cheapest overall phone available, costing almost $450 cheaper after two years (going the subsidized route).

Using information from BillShrink, costs of phones (both with and without contract) and plans over 24 month period. Unlocked Phones and Phones without Contracts shown using closest Average Usage Plan Pricing, as specified on BillShrink. For T-Mobile, this would be the Even More Plus 1000 plan (1000 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited web).

T-Mobile and Google have a very competitively priced phone on their hands and it will be VERY interesting to see how the other carriers react.
